Botanical is defined generically as “pertaining to plants” and, in that context, is sometimes used broadly as a category to include any plant motif, be it floral or non-floral, abstract or realistic. These more detailed realistic patterns are often seen in cottage, shabby chic, colonial, and tropical decors.
BBotanical Prints are historically illustrations which scientifically identify the parts and characteristics of realistically-rendered plants. Therefore, the term “Botanical Pattern” in decor often bears connotations of a realistic representation of herbs and garden plants.
The term Botanical Pattern is sometimes mistaken to mean representation of “non-floral” plants which is usually referred to as foliage.
