Made in USA: Why It Matters — and Why Barnett Home Décor Is Proud to Carry the Tradition Forward
Share
In today's world, "Made in USA" is more than just a label — it's a promise. It signals quality, integrity, durability, and a commitment to American workers and communities. At Barnett Home Décor, these values aren't marketing buzzwords. They’re the foundation we've built our business on for more than 130 years.
In a time when many companies have outsourced manufacturing in pursuit of cheaper labor, Barnett stands apart: proudly family-owned, women-led, and Made in the USA with your choice of imported or American-made fabrics — every single day.
Our Story: Evolving with America, Without Ever Compromising
Founded in Georgia in 1889, Barnett Home Décor began by making mule collar pads for farmers and draft animals — because at that time, that's what America needed.
When the call came during World Wars I and II, we pivoted to producing pup tents and military canvas goods. When postwar America saw an explosion of new homeowners, we adapted again, launching a full line of soft home furnishings to meet the growing demand for comfort and style. And when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and Americans turned dining rooms into makeshift offices, our chair pads became essential home office upgrades.
Through every era of change, one thing has remained constant: our commitment to quality, American jobs, and doing things the right way.
Staying American-Made: A Conscious Choice — Twice
After the pandemic, rising costs in materials, labor, and freight forced many manufacturers to reconsider their operations. Some went offshore. Some cut corners.
We chose not to.
Even with overseas sewing offers from trusted fabric suppliers, Barnett made the deliberate decision to keep every cushion proudly made in Macon, Georgia.
This wasn't the first time. Earlier in our journey, when Amazon's rise put many of our wholesale dealers out of business, we faced another crossroads. Rather than chasing lower costs overseas, we bet on ourselves — launching our direct-to-consumer brand and rebuilding through eCommerce, without compromising our American manufacturing roots.
Every Barnett cushion is a testament to that commitment.
Quality You Can Feel — and Count On
Our customers often tell us they’re stunned the first time they lift a Barnett cushion.
- The weight. (Thanks to our premium latex foam fill — heavy, dense, and built to last.)
- The thickness and texture of the fabrics. (Many of our fabrics are thicker and more durable than you’ll find on imported alternatives.)
- The durability of the stitching. (We often hear from customers whose Barnett cushions have lasted 10–20 years — and counting.)
At our own offices, many of the chair pads we sit on every day are 4–13 years old — and the ones in our break room are even older. The difference lies in our materials and construction:
- Latex foam fill that holds its loft far better over time than polyester fiber or memory foam alternatives.
- Meticulous sewing techniques, including lock-stitched seams and triple-stitched ties for lasting durability.
When we say Barnett cushions are built to last, we mean it — and we live it every day.
Sourcing with Integrity: The Best of Both Worlds
Our latex foam and many of our fabrics are Made in USA. Some of our fabrics are entirely woven, dyed, and printed in the USA. Others are woven overseas — in places like Spain or India — and then dyed or printed in USA. When we do use imported cloth, it's because it offers an exceptional balance of affordability and quality — and we always provide customers with a transparent choice.
We work hard to offer options for customers who prioritize 100% American-made materials, as well as beautiful imported textiles when needed to keep our collections accessible.
If you prefer to shop cushions made with fabrics that are entirely Made in USA, you can select the "Made in USA" filter. Cushions made from imported fabric or imported cloth that was dyed or printed in the US will be clearly labeled Made in USA with US or Imported Fabric.
Why "Made in China" Isn't Always a Bargain
While offshoring may lower sticker prices, it often comes with hidden costs:
- Product safety risks, from poorly regulated factories.
- Lower quality materials and shorter product lifespans.
- Ethical concerns, including labor rights violations.
- Higher environmental impact, due to lax pollution controls and transoceanic shipping.
We've seen too many American icons — from Levi’s to Barbie to Rawlings — shift production overseas and lose something important along the way. At Barnett, we refuse to follow that path. We believe quality, ethics, and community are worth investing in.
Our Customers: A Community Built on Shared Values
Our most loyal customers tend to share something in common:
- A passion for supporting Made in USA brands.
- A deep appreciation for craftsmanship — many are former sewers who recognize a good stitch when they see one.
- A sense of loyalty — many come back to us after 10 or even 20 years when their original Barnett cushions finally need a refresh.
We are honored to still be here — serving generations of American families who believe that doing things the right way still matters.
The Barnett Difference: Made in USA, Made to Last
Choosing American-made is about more than patriotism — it's about making a smart, lasting investment in quality, community, and tradition.
At Barnett Home Décor, we’re proud to continue that tradition every single day — with every cushion we design, sew, and ship from our hometown in Georgia.
Sustainability, the Barnett Way
Being Made in USA also means being a responsible manufacturer.
At Barnett, we:
- Use 100% pre-consumer recycled latex foam for our fills.
- Offer fabrics with OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 and GREENGUARD® Gold certifications — safer for families, children, and pets.
- Choose indoor-outdoor fabrics that are inherently moisture-resistant, not chemically treated.
- Ship with minimal packaging — no plastic wrapping on our cushions — a practice we tested carefully to ensure product quality without unnecessary waste.
- Actively seek to upcycle fabric offcuts and reduce foam waste as part of our ongoing commitment to sustainable manufacturing.
Choosing Barnett means choosing a product that’s better for your home — and better for the planet.
Thank you for making Made in USA matter.
